Students in a business administration class at Penn State's Greater Allegheny campus are conducting a semester-long study of McKeesport's operations and will present a strategic plan to Mayor Mike Cherepko.
A semester-long project is part of the Strategic Business Planning course taught by Michelle Hough, associate professor of business, which serves as the capstone course of Penn State's bachelor of science in business.
"We are so grateful for the opportunity to work with Mayor Cherepko and the City of McKeesport," Hough says. "In the past, classes have examined local business. I wanted the students to be exposed to a civic organization as well. We chose McKeesport because our campus is an integral part of the community."
The students presented a draft of a mission statement, vision, and slogan for the city. Since the project is ongoing, they asked the mayor questions about the city’s plans for housing, services, and future development. They will use the information they gathered to form recommendations and an in-depth strategic plan for the mayor.
The students also produced and presented a promotional video for the city.
"I like what I see so far. I think your ideas will be very helpful as we move forward," Cherepko told the class during a recent meeting. I would like to show this video at events throughout the city, and I look forward to seeing your final plan."
