Almost 300 homes and businesses in the Mon-Yough area remain without power after powerful thunderstorms ripped through the area on Tuesday afternoon.

Wednesday morning, Duquesne Light reported 721 customers without electric service, with 268 located in West Mifflin, McKeesport, North Versailles Twp., Port Vue, Pittsburgh's Hazelwood neighborhood, White Oak, Liberty Borough and Duquesne.

A National Weather Service map shows that the heaviest rainfall yesterday was centered almost perfectly on McKeesport, with the city and surrounding communities receiving 1.5 to 3 inches of rain.

Yet only a few miles away, areas such as Finleyville, South Park and Pleasant Hills received less than a half-inch. Moon Twp. reported only a "trace" of precipitaton yesterday, and Pittsburgh International Airport in Findlay Twp. reported none at all.

Unofficial observations in White Oak and Port Vue measured 3 to 5 inches of rain on Tuesday afternoon.

Official observers at Allegheny County Airport and Braddock Lock & Dam measured 1.7 inches of rain and 2.33 inches of rain, respectively.

No river flooding is expected in the Mon-Yough area, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, though with additional thunderstorms possible today and Thursday, the National Weather Service is warning that flash flooding is possible along streams, creeks and roads with poor drainage.

The ramps from the Mansfield Bridge to McKeesport remain closed after being inundated with several feet of water, mud and debris on Tuesday, but the underpass from McKeesport to Glassport is open, and traffic is also being allowed onto the bridge from both McKeesport and Glassport.

Liberty Borough Mayor Jane Weigand declared a state of emergency on Tuesday night when a fire at a Duquesne Light substation blacked out that borough and much of Port Vue. An emergency shelter was opened at South Allegheny High School and then moved to the Early Childhood Center on Glendale Avenue, said a school district spokesperson.

Liberty residents who need food or shelter help should call the volunteer fire department at (412) 672-1820 or in an emergency 9-1-1.
