West Mifflin police have filed criminal charges against nine young people involved in a disturbance at Kennywood Park on May 2.

Cell-phone videos and security camera footage helped identify the suspects, borough police Chief Ken Davies said.

In a prepared statement, Davies said the youths, whose names were not released, will face a variety of summary and misdemeanor charges. In addition, he said, West Mifflin police will open a sub-station within the park with Kennywood's assistance.

"We also continue to work with the park monitoring key social media streams, increasing (our) police presence on site with foot patrol, mobile assistance and undercover operation," Davies said.

At least 24 police departments, including West Mifflin, were called to Kennywood just before 11 p.m. May 2 for reports of a disturbance. Callers reported "multiple youths" ages 12 to 17 were running through the park and the parking lot area outside, disturbing and annoying visitors.

Several fights also were reported, which according to published reports spilled over into the parking lot of the McDonald's restaurant across Kennywood Boulevard.

Davies said West Mifflin police detectives were given cell phone videos and security camera video from within Kennywood, and also watched videos posted on the Internet.

From those videos, he said, police "identified persons of interest."

Kennywood opened for the season on May 15.
