Homestead Borough will receive $100,000 toward creation of a one-mile-long trail and bike park that will provide a direct connection between the Eighth Avenue business district and the Great Allegheny Passage bicycle trail.

The grant was one of 45 projects in 22 counties --- totalling $41.5 million --- funded last week through grants from the state Department of Transportation's Multimodal Transportation Fund.

"Our multimodal investments support important projects that help residents and local economies," Gov. Tom Wolf said in a prepared statement. "We are making possible improvements that will bring significant benefits to these communities."

The Multimodal Transportation Fund was created by Pennsylvania's transportation plan created under state Act 89, enacted in November 2013. Communities will begin submitting applications for the next round of funding later this month, a PennDOT spokesperson said.
