It's no longer just "play school." Early education in the basics of math, reading, shapes and colors, as well as the abilty to play with other kids, is now being recognized as a critical part of a child's development.

Although kindergarten education is not currently required in Pennsylvania, most parents view it as a necessity, and the McKeesport Area School District is among those offering pre-kindergarten education for pupils as young as 3 years old.

This week on "Two Rivers, 30 Minutes," we talked to Karen Chapman, who oversees pre-K programs at McKeesport Area, along with district spokeswoman Kristen Davis.

Chapman, principal of Founders' Hall Middle School and an educator with 30 years' experience, described some of the programs the district offers, including ones that are designed to teach computer literacy.

She also talked about ways that parents, grandparents, guardians and aunts and uncles can help get their kids ready for school, through educational games and other activities.

"Two Rivers, 30 Minutes" airs at 9:30 a.m. Fridays on WEDO (810) and is also available as a free download for your smartphone or iPod from Stitcher and iTunes.
