A Duquesne man has been indicted by a federal grand jury after prosecutors said he was caught with quantities of heroin and so-called "designer drugs" related to the tranquilizer fentanyl.

Marquis Brown, 29, also is charged with violating federal firearms laws, U.S. Attorney Scott W. Brady said in a prepared release.

Brown is currently being held in Allegheny County Jail in lieu of $15,000 bond after being arrested Monday by Duquesne police on charges of possession of controlled substances with intent to deliver, tampering with evidence and resisting arrest.

According to the indictment, handed down last week, federal prosecutors allege that in 2017, Brown was found in possession of quantities of heroin and drugs called para-fluoroisobutyryl fentanyl and methoxyacetyl fentanyl.

The drugs are opioids similar in chemical makeup to the better-known fentanyl.

Brown also is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm as a convicted felon, Brady said.

State court records indicate that Brown has a history of arrests, as well as several convictions, dating to at least 2007.

Federal law prohibits a felon from possessing a firearm, Brady said.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy M. Lanni is prosecuting the case, which was brought under the U.S. Justice Department's Project Safe Neighborhoods.

The FBI's Opioid Task Force, which includes police officers from Pittsburgh, Munhall, West Mifflin, Allegheny County and the Port Authority, as well as Allegheny County sheriff's deputies, conducted the investigation leading to the indictment in this case, Brady said.
