DJs Candy and Mike will spin the tunes on May 26 and June 16 when American Legion Gen. Smedley D. Butler Post 701 in White Oak holds its next oldies dances.
Doors open at 7 p.m. and music continues until 11 p.m., a spokesman said. Admission is $5 and all proceeds benefit veterans' programs.

It took less than a half-hour for a federal jury to convict two former Mon Valley men in connection with what prosecutors described as a "robbery spree."
Kahlil Shelton, 23, of Duquesne, and Deron Howell, 25, of Swissvale, are scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 1 by U.S. District Judge Billy Roy Wilson in Pittsburgh.
Both could face life sentences, a spokeswoman for U.S. Attorney Scott W. Brady said Monday.

Work is underway to renovate two community ball fields in the city to update the facilities and make them more accessible to people with disabilities.
The projects at Fawcett and Duncan fields, totaling $210,000, are designed to enhance recreation opportunities for younger residents and make the neighborhoods more attractive places to live, McKeesport Mayor Michael Cherepko said.
The fields are used on a daily basis during the baseball and softball season, he said, including by several leagues.
“Youth sports (are) a way to keep our children active and involved in a structured program that will teach them cooperation, team building and other responsibilities that will benefit them for the rest of their lives,” Cherepko said. “My administration always will support initiatives and developments that provide positive life-learning experiences for our children.”

McKeesport Art Group will celebrate its 60th Anniversary this weekend with one of its largest spring art shows in recent memory.
Scheduled to go on display at 5 p.m. Friday at Jacob Woll Pavilion in Renziehausen Park are 135 entries, including many from area students, said Jan Catalogna, group president.
Awards will be presented during a ceremony at 7 p.m. Friday. Hours are 12 noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and 12 noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, Catalogna said. There is no admission charge, and original art and crafts will be for sale.
"We have metal working, 3-D art, photography and computer art, in addition to" paintings and drawings, she said.

In sailing, it's not as simple as just setting out a boat on a straight course.
Instead, Kathleen Miclot told an audience at Edgewood Country Club, navigating a sailboat is all about turning and steering to follow the wind and the current. And succeeding depends on the whole crew.
“It takes work and it takes help from other people," said Miclot, who spoke at the 32nd annual All Star Banquet Dinner and Award Ceremony for McKeesport-based Auberle. "With the correct help, you can get where you are trying to get.”
The ceremony, held May 7, recognized donors, foster parents and corporate sponsors.

Duquesne has improved its fire preparedness rating by five points, according to a national agency.
At last week's Duquesne City Council meeting, fire Chief Frank Cobb said the Insurance Service Office, Inc., has moved the community from a 9 to a 4, on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the best and 10 the worst.
The city had last been rated in 1989, Cobb said. The rating reflects the overall effectiveness of the department, he said.
Cobb said 24 calls for service were answered by the department for April. The chief also thanked Mayor Nickole Nesby and city council for funding repairs to the department's ladder truck.

Port Authority's recently appointed CEO, Katharine Eagan Kelleman, is scheduled to attend a public hearing at 6 p.m. tonight at the Palisades, corner of Fifth Avenue and Water Street, Downtown, to discuss the latest proposed changes to Mon Valley bus routes.
But the public response to the changes --- planned in conjunction with a proposed new Bus Rapid Transit loop between downtown Pittsburgh and Oakland --- have been "overwhelmingly positive," says Adam Brandolph, a spokesman for the transit agency.
Additional public meetings are planned May 14 in downtown Pittsburgh, May 17 in Pittsburgh's Uptown neighborhood, and May 22 and 24 in Oakland, Brandolph says.
The current proposal would preserve the frequency of 61 A, B and C routes that connect Mon Valley communities such as Braddock, Swissvale, Homestead, West Mifflin, Duquesne and McKeesport with downtown Pittsburgh via Oakland.

Firefighters and city officials in Duquesne are awaiting the results of an evaluation of the fire department's readiness.
The evaluation is being done by the Insurance Services Office, Inc., said Duquesne fire Chief Frank Cobb. The last ISO inspection of Duquesne was done in 1989, he said.
ISO assigns a Public Protection Classification rating between 1 and 10, with 1 being the best and 10 being the worst. Duquesne's PPC rating was seven, Cobb said.
“They seemed pleased,” he said. “It’s looking pretty good and we’re anticipating a much lower rating than we received several decades ago.”

Officials at the Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County are working on a solution to sewer backups that have repeatedly flooded the basements of several White Oak homeowners.
John Palyo, borough manager, said the problem in the area of Vermont and Ohio avenues is particularly acute during wet weather and following heavy rainstorms.
White Oak sold its sewer lines to the Westmoreland authority --- which also provides water to McKeesport, Port Vue, White Oak and several neighboring Allegheny County communities --- several years ago, Palyo said.
And although Pennsylvania American Water Co. now owns the McKeesport sewage treatment plant, Gary Lobaugh, a spokesman for the water company, said it only treats White Oak's wastewater --- it doesn't maintain the underground lines in the borough.
