Crews Continue Work on Daily News Parking Lot

McKeesport public works crews are continuing to prepare a new parking lot for the former Daily News Building at the corner of Walnut Street and Lysle Boulevard.

Shown working at the site on Thursday are city public works drivers Rich Booth and Billy Baker, equipment operator Mark Husak and laborer Frank Rausch. Not shown is city foreman Jeff DiPerna.

The building was purchased by the city from the McKeesport Daily News' parent company, Trib Total Media, in November 2017. The newspaper published its last edition on Dec. 31, 2015.

Three Face Trial in Connection With Penny Street Shooting

Three people are currently being held in Allegheny County Jail on charges that include attempted homicide in connection with a shooting Dec. 17 on Penny Street in the city.

Two of the suspects were ordered held for court this week following a preliminary hearing, while an alleged accomplice faces formal arraignment next week in Allegheny County Common Pleas Court.

Following a preliminary hearing Monday, Magisterial District Judge Eugene Riazzi ordered Aaron W. Smith, 24, of Pittsburgh's West End, and Cortrell L. McKenzie, 24, of Pitcairn, both held for court on charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, robbery, conspiracy, carrying a firearm without a license, theft by unlawful taking and reckless endangerment.

Car Show, Memorial Day Parade Planned in W.O.

The third-annual "Cars, Trucks and Bikes in the Park" is slated for 3 to 9 p.m. May 27 at the Heritage Pool Complex on Victoria Drive in White Oak.

Sponsored by the Rainbow Volunteer Fire Company, the event will include food, drawings and entertainment, a spokesperson said. Registration for vehicles begins at 2 p.m. The first 100 cars will receive a dash plaque and trophies will be awarded.

The event will take place rain or shine. Music will be provided by Lights Up Entertainment and Dana Von Dangerously will be making an appearance.

White Oak Welcomes New Council Member, Police Officer

Stephen Pholar (above) was appointed to White Oak Council on Monday at an abbreviated meeting.

A motion made by Council President Dave Pasternak to appoint Pholar to the position passed unanimously. Pholar has been a White Oak resident for 17 years.

Pholar was involved with government work for over 40 years as a consultant for economic development.

Council members Lou Bender, Charles Davis and Ed Babyak were absent, and the meeting ended after Councilman Ken Robb had to leave early.

3rd Annual Bark in the Park Slated Oct. 6 in Port Vue

Work continues on a dog park in Port Vue and planning is underway for an October fundraiser and celebration.

The third-annual "Bark in the Park" for Cindy's Memorial Bark Park is scheduled for 12 noon to 5 p.m. Oct. 6 at Romine Avenue Fields, a spokeswoman said. The dog park itself is being built near the Port Vue Athletic Association fields, just off Washington Boulevard.

A spokeswoman said there will be fewer vendor spots than in previous years, so organizations wanting to participate should get their applications submitted as soon as possible.

Cindy's Memorial Bark Park is named for Cynthia McGraw-Davic, a pet lover and animal advocate who died Oct. 5, 2015, of small-cell lung cancer at age 46.

White Oak Legion Schedules Oldies Dances

DJs Candy and Mike will spin the tunes on May 26 and June 16 when American Legion Gen. Smedley D. Butler Post 701 in White Oak holds its next oldies dances.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and music continues until 11 p.m., a spokesman said. Admission is $5 and all proceeds benefit veterans' programs.

Two Former Mon Valley Men Convicted in Robbery 'Spree'

It took less than a half-hour for a federal jury to convict two former Mon Valley men in connection with what prosecutors described as a "robbery spree."

Kahlil Shelton, 23, of Duquesne, and Deron Howell, 25, of Swissvale, are scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 1 by U.S. District Judge Billy Roy Wilson in Pittsburgh.

Both could face life sentences, a spokeswoman for U.S. Attorney Scott W. Brady said Monday.

Work Underway to Renovate Two City Ball Fields

Work is underway to renovate two community ball fields in the city to update the facilities and make them more accessible to people with disabilities.

The projects at Fawcett and Duncan fields, totaling $210,000, are designed to enhance recreation opportunities for younger residents and make the neighborhoods more attractive places to live, McKeesport Mayor Michael Cherepko said.

The fields are used on a daily basis during the baseball and softball season, he said, including by several leagues.

“Youth sports (are) a way to keep our children active and involved in a structured program that will teach them cooperation, team building and other responsibilities that will benefit them for the rest of their lives,” Cherepko said. “My administration always will support initiatives and developments that provide positive life-learning experiences for our children.”

Art Group Celebrates 60 Years With Spring Show

McKeesport Art Group will celebrate its 60th Anniversary this weekend with one of its largest spring art shows in recent memory.

Scheduled to go on display at 5 p.m. Friday at Jacob Woll Pavilion in Renziehausen Park are 135 entries, including many from area students, said Jan Catalogna, group president.

Awards will be presented during a ceremony at 7 p.m. Friday. Hours are 12 noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and 12 noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, Catalogna said. There is no admission charge, and original art and crafts will be for sale.

"We have metal working, 3-D art, photography and computer art, in addition to" paintings and drawings, she said.
