Mon Yough Chamber Slates July 15 Golf Outing

Mon Yough Area Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual golf outing July 15 at Youghiogheny Country Club, a spokesperson said. A portion of the ticket sales will benefit the Healthy Food Center.

Events will include sign-in at 9 a.m., shot-gun start at 10 a.m., hors d’oeuvres in dining room at 3 p.m. and a banquet and awards ceremony at 3:30 p.m.

The club is located at 901 Greenock-Buena Vista Road in Elizabeth Twp. Individual packages start at $30 for dinner and reservations must be received by July 1. For more information, visit the chamber’s website.

 

Bank Presents Check for Redevelopment Effort

First Commonwealth Bank recently presented the McKees Point Development Group with a $100,000 check to help fund another year of a six-year Neighborhood Assistance Program.

The non-profit group is working to redevelop the Penn-McKee Hotel for reuse, demolish blighted buildings in the city’s Downtown area and help provide home repairs to city residents.

Partners include Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh and ACTION-Housing. Additional funding is being provided by Duquesne Light, Noble Energy and UPMC Health System, who are utilizing state tax credits.

NAMI Slates April Meeting at PSGA

NAMI McKeesport affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness will meet at 6 p.m. April 6 at Penn State Greater Allegheny in Room F122 of the Frable Building, a spokeswoman said.

The meeting is open to families and friends of loved ones living with mental illness.

Printed copies of the information presented in March by a Social Security Administration representative will be available. The information deals with qualifications necessary to apply for Social Security Disability benefits for those with medically diagnosed mental illness conditions.  A "care and share" session will follow for those in attendance.

Economic development will be the focus of the annual legislative lunch, sponsored by Mon Yough Area Chamber of Commerce.

The keynote speaker at the April 29 event will be state Sen. Jim Brewster of McKeesport and special guests will include Richard Vilello, deputy secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Community & Economic Development, and Lance Chimka, director of Allegheny County Economic Development.

Rent, Mortgage Relief Available for Homeowners

Local homeowners who are facing foreclosure or other financial hardships because of the COVID-19 pandemic may be eligible for help.

The Pennsylvania Homeowner Assistance Fund will help homeowners whose annual household income is at or below 150 percent of the area median.

In the Mon-Yough area, Mon Valley Initiative is one of the agencies that will provide help through the program.

“PAHAF is designed to assist homeowners facing mortgage delinquencies, defaults, foreclosures and the loss of utilities or home energy services,” said Jonathan Weaver, housing counselor at MVI, which has offices in Charleroi and Homestead.

County Plans Online Career Fair April 13

Allegheny County will hold a virtual career fair on April 13 to fill a variety of vacant positions, including full- and part-time jobs and internships, a spokeswoman said.

Two sessions will be held, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Job seekers can register beginning today, she said, and the event will be “mobile-friendly,” allowing participants to use their computer, tablet or phone.

No software is needed, only Internet access, county spokeswoman Amie Downs said.

“We saw during the pandemic just how important county services were to residents. Each and every day, county operations have an impact on someone’s life,” said County Executive Rich Fitzgerald. “There are opportunities available in departments across the county with competitive pay and good benefits. These aren’t just jobs, but the start of a career.”

‘A Hidden Gem’ Celebrates 60 Years

On a recent Saturday night, a steady crowd of McKeesport regulars — along with others who were visiting for the first time — funneled into the tiny entrance of Tillie’s Restaurant on 36th Avenue.

Some were aware that Tillie’s was approaching its 60th anniversary. Others had no idea. But people who frequent Tillie’s have many fond memories of the restaurant throughout the years.

“I remember coming here with grandma when I was just young. She’s no longer living but it brings back memories,” said Robyn Lewis of McKeesport, who was waiting to be seated with her husband, Wayne, and their daughter Taylor.

For Wayne, his favorite dish is plain old spaghetti and meatballs. For Taylor, it’s the homemade gnocchi. As for Robyn, she sticks with the giant raviolis made from scratch.

St. Sava Plans Lenten Fish Fries

St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church of McKeesport-Duquesne will hold fish fries on March 4, 11, 18 and 25 during Lent.

The fish fry menu will be for take-out only. Orders may be placed by phone, or at 901 Hartman St., a spokeswoman said. The menu may be found on the church’s website.

The menu is similar from week to week with the exception of a different soup each Friday.

Pre-orders will be taken prior to each event from Sunday through Wednesday by calling DeeDee Baskot at (412) 469-2955. Pre-order payment will be by credit card only. On the day of the fish fry, orders may be picked up in the church hall from 2 to 6 p.m.

 

Semper Fi Club Marks 101 Years

McKeesport’s Semper Fidelis Club installed its new officers during a luncheon ceremony on Saturday afternoon.

The club, which is marking its 101st anniversary this year, promotes educational programs, provides scholarships for students of African-American descent, and promotes civic and social activities within the community and, whenever feasible, regionally and nationally.

Club members said the group also has been a source of input and support on issues that affect women and supports other local charities.

Newly installed officers for 2022 are Jacqueline Blake, president; Joanne Rodgers, vice president; Tia Wanzo, treasurer; Laura Green, financial secretary; T. Renee Easley, recording secretary; Fawn Walker Montgomery, assistant recording secretary; Amber Webb, corresponding secretary; Anica Jones Paige, parliamentarian; Paula Robinson, chaplain; and Joy Simmons, historian.

The McKeesport affiliate of the National Association on Mental Illness will host a teleconference meeting at 4:30 p.m. March 2 with Elaine Cole, public affairs specialist for the Social Security Administration.

Cole will answer questions about Social Security benefits for those living with mental illness, a spokeswoman said.

Elaine Cole received a Bachelor of Science in business administration and human resource management from Robert Morris University in 2003, and a Master of Science in executive leadership from Champlain College in 2017.. Cole became a public affairs specialist for the Social Security Administration and has been serving in this position for 10 years.
