McKeesport Area Ministerium will host a ecumenical prayer service to pray for “healing for our nation” from 12 noon to 1 p.m. March 3 at Zion Baptist Church, 1300 Locust St.
A spokesperson said participants are invited to worship in person, with COVID-19 safety measures in place, or virtually via Zoom or Facebook.

The West Newton Lions Club, 511 Pittsburgh St., will hold an Ash Wednesday (Feb. 17) fish fry to raise money to support its programs.
The menu includes Alaskan pollock deep-fried fish sandwich platter, baked macaroni & cheese or haluski, and cole slaw for $12, or a fish sandwich only for $6.75.

St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church, 901 Hartman St., will hold lenten fish fries on Fridays, beginning Feb. 19 and continuing through March 12.
All meals are take-out only and must be pre-ordered.
Pre-orders are being taken Sundays through Wednesdays by calling (412) 469-2955. Payment must be made by credit card, a spokeswoman said.

I’ve gotten a number of inquiries about the “Tube City Writers” program being advertised on Facebook and Twitter.
“Tube City Writers” is a program of Point Park University and is not affiliated with Tube City Community Media Inc. When the program was created, our board asked them to consider changing their name, because we felt it would be confusing. They declined.
If you are interested in “Tube City Writers,” you will need to contact them at the address listed in their advertisements.
Along the same lines, we are not “McKeesport Community Newsroom,” which is also a Point Park University program.
We do accept opinion pieces and commentary submitted by local authors, and we pay, upon publication, for news stories of interest to McKeesport, Duquesne, North Versailles Twp., White Oak and the surrounding area.
We are especially interested in recruiting people to help us cover Duquesne. If you are interested, let me know.

The Allegheny County Health Department is reminding fish fry sponsors that they must have a valid health permit to operate.
A spokesman said churches, fire departments or other organizations that do not already have a valid health permit will need to complete a temporary permit application and provide the permit fee to the Health Department.
All fish fries allowing in-person dining must follow COVID-19 safety requirements and guidance for restaurants from the state.

McKeesport City Council will not meet this week, said a spokesperson for Mayor Michael Cherepko. The next scheduled meeting is March 3.
In an announcement posted on the front page of the city’s website, the mayor’s office said there are no actionable agenda items for consideration this month.
Council meetings will be closed to in-person public participation until further notice in light of COVID-19 mitigation efforts currently in place, the mayor’s office said.

The West Newton Center for Active Adults is selling a special fundraising raffle ticket tied to the Pennsylvania Lottery’s April 1 evening three-digit drawing.
“I think we can safely say that 2020 made fools of all of us, but winter blew in and with the change in seasons came the change in calendars,” said Paul A Kurzdorfer III, center manager. “Now we sit in 2021 anxiously awaiting spring and those better days ahead.”

In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank continues to offer drive-up food distributions in the city, Duquesne, Glassport and other communities.
A spokesperson said the drive-up distributions are designed to comply with federal, state and county COVID-19 mitigation regulations that limit crowd sizes and recommend social distancing.
The next drive-up distribution is from 3 to 5 p.m. Feb. 1 at the food bank’s headquarters, 1 N. Linden St., Duquesne, followed by a distribution from 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 11 at Queen of the Rosary Church, 530 Michigan Ave., Glassport, and 10 a.m. to 12 noon Feb. 20 at Founders Hall Middle School, 1960 Eden Park Blvd., McKeesport.

The Allegheny County Health Department has opened additional vaccination appointments for individuals 65 years of age and older, beginning Feb. 9 and continuing through Feb. 13.
A spokesman said the vaccination site, located at the DoubleTree Hotel near the Monroeville Mall, is in “great demand” and that appointments are required.
The health department also continues to vaccinate eligible healthcare workers and people who are returning for the second shot in the vaccination series.

White Oak’s Heritage Hill Pool is expected to open this year.
The pool didn’t open in 2020, in part due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which meant that lifeguards could not be trained and necessary repairs could not be completed.
The city of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County also did not open their pools last year.
Councilwoman Julie Opferman said last week that although pool season is still months away, it’s on council’s radar.
However, she said, Heritage Hill Pool will implement a new system of pricing and passes this year.
