Fishing Derby Rescheduled for June 11

The City of McKeesport Kids Fishing Derby (previously advertised for June 4) has been rescheduled for 8 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday, June 11 at Lake Emilie in Renziehausen Park.

This event is for children age 16 and younger. Registration is 50 cents. Prizes will be awarded for the biggest fish and other contests. Children must be present for the duration of the event to claim their prizes. For more information, call 412-675-5020, ext. 610.

Trail Council, Kiwanis Plan June 26 Swim-Bike-Run Event

Registration is now open for the first-ever Going for the Goal Sprint Triathlon in McKeesport on June 26.

Benefiting the Kiwanis Club of McKeesport-White Oak and McKeesport Trail Council, the event will offer participants the opportunity to test their endurance with a quarter-mile swim at McKeesport Area High School, a 5-kilometer foot race through Renziehausen Park, and a nearly nine-mile bike ride on the city’s streets and bicycle trail.

A spokesman said the event will help support local programs benefiting children and improvements to the McKeesport section of the Great Allegheny Passage.

White Oak Church Schedules Festival, Flea Market

St. Angela Merici Church in White Oak will hold its Family Festival on July 7, 8 and 9, a spokeswoman said.

Nightly highlights will include a flea market, basket raffle, Kids’ Kingdom, gaming area, midway games, bake sale and bingo.

Hours are 7 to 11 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday (the flea market will open at 6:30 Saturday).

The main food booth will feature stuffed cabbage, haluski, pierogies, grilled foods, homemade pizza, hot sausage and a nightly special, and there will be a food service booth with kids’ favorites such as walking tacos as well as a funnel cakes booth. Disc jockey K.C. Jones will provide nightly entertainment, magician Chuck Caputo will perform in the Kids' Kingdom, and local mascots will visit on Friday and Saturday.

Marina 'Blessing' Set for Saturday Morning

A blessing of the McKee's Point Marina, the boats, rivers, bike trail and people of the McKeesport area will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday by the McKeesport Area Ministerium and the Jericho People, a spokeswoman said.

The blessing is non-denominational and is open to the public.

A portion of the ceremony will be broadcast during the 12 noon hour on Tube City Online's Internet radio station, WMCK.FM.

Memorial Day Events, Closings Posted

The City of McKeesport will conduct Memorial Day Services at Memorial Park at 10 a.m. Monday, a spokeswoman said. The event will take place inside the Palisades in the event of rain.

Events will be broadcast live over Tube City Online's Internet radio station, WMCK.FM.

Following McKeesport's service, banners honoring 11 McKeesport men who were killed in action during the Vietnam War will be presented to the LaRosa Boys and Girls Club during an 11 a.m. service at the club, 901 Ravine Street. Theses banners were sponsored by American Legion Post 361 and the City of McKeesport.

Port Vue's Memorial Day parade will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, beginning at the American Legion, corner of Romine Avenue and Gumbert Street, and proceeding down Romine Avenue to the borough's Honor Roll.

All Allegheny County offices will be closed on Monday in observance of Memorial Day. Normal business hours will resume on Tuesday, a spokesman said.

Allegheny County golf courses at North Park and South Park will be open from 5 a.m. until dusk, and the tennis courts at Boyce Park, North Park, Settlers Cabin Park and South Park will be open from 8 a.m. until sundown.


Health Dept. Seeks Input on Air Monitoring Plan

The Allegheny County Health Department is requesting public comment on its Air Monitoring Network Plan for 2017.

A 63-page document required by the federal Environmental Protection Agency, the report provides a detailed description of how and where air pollution is monitored at 14 locations in Allegheny County, including sites in Clairton, Glassport, Liberty, Lincoln and North Braddock.

The report provides the specific location of each monitoring station, siting criteria, monitoring methods and objectives, frequency of sampling, pollutants measured at each station and aerial photographs showing their proximity to air pollution sources.

Art Group Opens Annual Show, Awards Prizes

McKeesport Art Group opened its 58th annual Spring Art Show Friday night at Renziehausen Park's Jacob Woll Pavilion.

The show continues from 12 to 8 p.m. Saturday and 12 to 6 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free, and original art, print and other items ranging from pottery to fabric art will be available for purchase.

Heritage Center Event Remembers 1976 Fire

Forty years ago this month, a massive fire swept through Downtown McKeesport, destroying the former Famous Department Store, the Elks Lodge, the old Market Street School and several other buildings, and heavily damaging the Memorial Theater, which never re-opened.

On Sunday (May 15), retired firefighters and other residents will discuss their memories of the May 21, 1976, blaze that caused $5 million in damage --- roughly $20.9 million in 2016 dollars --- to the city's business district. More than 40 fire departments from throughout western Pennsylvania fought the fire.

The event begins at 2 p.m. at the McKeesport Regional History and Heritage Center, 1832 Arboretum Drive, Renziehausen Park, and will be moderated by Jason Togyer, executive director of Tube City Community Media Inc., and a heritage center board member.

Admission is free and refreshments will be provided by Local Union 10 of the International Association of Firefighters, representing McKeesport firefighters.

Liberty Boro. Hosts Community Yard Sale

Greater Allegheny Prof Wins Teaching Award

A professor at Penn State's Greater Allegheny Campus in McKeesport is one of six statewide honored with the university's award for excellence in teaching.

Megan L. Nagel, professor of chemistry, was named on April 22 one of the recipients of the George W. Atherton Award for Excellence in Teaching for 2016.

The award is named after Penn State’s seventh president.

Nagel says she views learning as a "two-way street."

“A classroom that allows for students’ questions, a lack of judgment, and a call to think critically contributes to an environment that’s ripe for learning,” she says.
