Free Space Available for Political Candidates

Pennsylvania's Primary Election is May 21.

Tube City Community Media Inc. doesn't endorse candidates or knowingly accept political advertising, but we again will make available this space as a free, public outlet for local political candidates.

Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Any candidate for a municipal (city, borough or township mayor, commissioner, council, etc.) or school board office in the McKeesport Area, Duquesne, East Allegheny, South Allegheny or West Mifflin Area school districts may submit a candidate profile for publication.

Deadline is Tuesday, May 7.

Profiles received after the deadline will be published at the editor's option, time permitting.

National Library Week Brings Full Slate of Events

Carnegie Library of McKeesport has scheduled a full slate of events during National Library Week. All events are free and open to the public.

At 10 a.m. Tuesday, the library's main branch, 1507 Library Ave., will screen the 2018 feature film "On the Basis of Sex," a biographical drama starring Felicity Jones as a young Ruth Bader Ginsburg arguing the early cases of her career as a lawyer.

The movie also stars Armie Hammer, Justin Theroux, Jack Reynor, Cailee Spaeny, Sam Waterston and Kathy Bates.

Work Begins on Homestead-Duquesne Road Paving Project

Crews from A. Folino Construction of Oakmont began work Tuesday to repair and repave Homestead-Duquesne Road in West Mifflin.

The $2 million project is expected to continue through August, a county spokesman said.

The work will include repairs to concrete and drainage systems to approximately 1.1 miles of road between Homeville Road in West Mifflin and Grant Avenue in Duquesne.

Easter Bunny Breakfast Planned in NV Twp.

Area Coin Clubs Schedule Upcoming Meetings

Two local coin clubs have scheduled their April meetings, a spokesman announced.

The monthly meeting of the South Hills Coin Club will be held at 8 p.m. April 9 at Bethel Presbyterian Church, 2999 Bethel Church Rd., Bethel Park. All members and the general public are invited. This month's program to be announced. A 50/50 will be offered and children's prizes will be awarded.

The monthly meeting of the Mon Valley Coin Club will be held at 2 p.m. April 21 at 303 Chamber Plaza in Charleroi. All members and the general public are invited. Program for this meeting to be announced.

DJs Candy and Mike will spin the tunes on March 30 and April 27 when American Legion Gen. Smedley D. Butler Post 701 in White Oak holds its next oldies dances.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and music continues until 11 p.m., a spokesman said. Admission is $5 and all proceeds benefit veterans' programs.

Celebrated Artist is Next Speaker in Campus' 'Crossing Bridges' Series

Artist Vanessa German is the next speaker in the "Crossing Bridges Summit" series hosted by Penn State Greater Allegheny.

German is a sculptor, painter, writer, activist, performer and poet who lives in Pittsburgh's Homewood neighborhood. In December, she received the $200,000 Don Tyson Prize from the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Arkansas. The prize, funded by the heirs to the Tyson Foods fortune, recognizes outstanding achievement by American artists.

German will speak at 7 p.m. April 5 in the Wunderley Gymnasium on the McKeesport campus. General admission and student tickets are free, a spokesman said, but an RSVP is required for both events.
