North Versailles Twp. commissioners have unanimously approved site plans for a new GetGo at the intersection of U.S. Route 30 and state Route 48, and executives from Giant Eagle say groundbreaking could happen as early as spring.
The convenience store, gas station and restaurant would replace the existing Kings Family Restaurant as well as the site of a former Marathon gasoline station.
Pasquale “Pat” Avolio, director of real-estate development and construction for Giant Eagle, spoke to commissioners at their Dec. 20 meeting. “We still need approval from PennDOT for a traffic impact study as well all requisite approvals from the municipality,” he said.
According to Allegheny County tax records, GetGo purchased the site in August for $6.5 million.
The 1.8-acre corner lot, located* at the west corner of the intersection of Lincoln Highway and Jacks Run Road, south of Route 30, was originally developed by the former King & Keeney Co. of McKeesport in the 1950s for use as a service station, and in 1967 became the site of Hartley King's first Kings Family Restaurant.
King, the restaurant chain's founder, sold it to a California company in 2015.
Commissioners unanimously approved a recommendation from the planning commission to accept the GetGo site plan, with several stipulations recommended by township solicitor Greg Evashavik.
Avolio said GetGo is in the process of applying for permits from PennDOT, in addition to satisfying other requirements necessary before construction can begin.
“What we are proposing is a 6,200-square-foot project that will be similar to the GetGo (we) built on Braddock Avenue near the Edgewood Towne Center in April,” Avolio said.
