Approximately 700 Mon Valley area seniors had a sweeter December after volunteers baked more than 6,300 holiday cookies --- 525 dozen --- to be distributed along with Meals on Wheels.
LifeSpan, a non-profit agency based in Homestead that serves seniors throughout the Mon Valley and South Hills, last week issued a "thank you" to everyone who baked or donated to its ninth-annual “Sweet Holiday Wishes” cookie campaign.
Each senior -- 709 total --- received a half-dozen cookies, a spokeswoman said.
LifeSpan is currently conducting a membership drive. The cost of a membership is $10 per year and provides access to a variety of LifeSpan activities for older residents who live independently.
"Our goal is to start 2019 with a bang and increase our membership," said Joyce Asmonga, agency support assistant. "Invite your friends to come and experience what we have to offer. You can visit any site to renew your membership or sign up as a new member."
The nearest Mon-Yough locations are in Olympia Shopping Center, Versailles; on the second level of Century III Mall in West Mifflin, near Dick's Sporting Goods; 530 Miller Ave., Clairton; and at 308 E. 8th Ave., Homestead.
For more information, call (412) 464-1300.
Upcoming activities include a trip to a special screening Jan. 17 of "Mary Poppins Returns" on the Rangos Giant Cinema at Carnegie Science Center on Pittsburgh's North Side, and a dinner trip Jan. 24 to the Shiloh Grill on Mt. Washington.
