North Versailles Twp. commissioners have approved acceptance of a $60,000 grant for police car and intersection cameras.

At the commissioners' April meeting, commissioners voted 6-0 to accept the grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. Commissioner Tracy Yusko was absent.

The grant was obtained with with assistance of state Rep. Brandon Markosek, D-Allegheny.

In other business:

Two commissioners objected to the hiring of James Pusey Jr. into the road department at $16 per hour.

“This is North Versailles Twp. at its finest,” Commissioner George Beswick said. “I received no job application and I know nothing about this person, except that he’s (Commissioner Russell Saula's) nephew. I vote no.”

Commissioner Daryl Mitchell said at least one other applicant tried to apply for the position, but was never interviewed.

“This man came up here numerous times inquiring about the job, or at least the opportunity for an interview,” Mitchell said. “I assume that didn't happen, I assume the township knew who they wanted.”

Commission Vice President Sam Juliano made the motion to hire Pusey, which passed 3-2-1, with Beswick and Mitchell voting no, and Saula abstaining.

Paving program: Township Engineer Dave Gilliland said recently approved paving projects will be underway throughout May and the playground project at Fairhaven Park will begin no later than May 18.

Commissioners also approved the following:

A motion to renew the maintenance contract with Norman Allen for the administration and police computer systems at a cost of $7,500 annually.

A motion to renew the Public Officials Professional Liability insurance policy through Chubb in the amount of $15,693.

A motion to update the employment status of Craig Procacina from probation to a laborer position retroactive to April 9, after successful completion of the probation period.

A motion to hire Connor Kieffer for the Summer Parks Maintenance Program at a rate of $8.50 per hour.

A motion to advertise for summer workers to be hired at the May meeting.

A motion to donate road millings to the East Allegheny School District for filling potholes in the parking lot at the bus garage.
