A city man has been charged in connection with the death Sept. 13 of the mother of his unborn child.

Isaac Smith, 25, is being held in the Allegheny County Jail on homicide charges after being arrested in Pleasant Hills on Friday night on a warrant obtained by the Allegheny County district attorney’s office.

Bail and arraignment information were not immediately available on Saturday morning.

Smith is accused in the death of Karli Short, 26, of Christy Park, who was found dead of a gunshot wound at her home on 25th Avenue just after 10:30 that morning. Short was five months pregnant with her first child at the time, family members said.

A $20,000 reward was offered for information related to Short’s murder.

Allegheny County police Lt. Venerando Costa said further investigation led detectives to charge Smith in connection with the killing. Smith was arrested by Allegheny County and Pleasant Hills police at 7 p.m. Friday, Costa said.

Short’s murder made national headlines because of her father’s football career. She was the daughter of Brandon Short, an investment banker, a member of the Penn State University board of trustees, and a standout athlete at McKeesport Area High School.

A defensive lineman, Short played professional football with the Carolina Panthers and the New York Giants, and was a member of the Giants’ team that played in Super Bowl XXXV.

In a statement released Friday night via social media, Short thanked friends, family and well-wishers for their prayers and support.

“Through the outstanding work from both the Allegheny County (police) and City of McKeesport police, there has been an arrest in the murder of my beloved daughter, Karli Short, and her unborn child,” he said.

“These have been some of the darkest days of my life but through the grace of God there have been so many wonderful family, extended family, friends that have provided hope and support,” Short said.
