The McKeesport Area High School Orchestra and Jazz Band will kick off the 53rd annual Holiday Music Program at the Allegheny County Courthouse in Pittsburgh, a spokeswoman announced.

The student groups will perform on the Grand Staircase in the courthouse beginning at 11:30 a.m. Nov. 30.

McKeesport’s Serra Catholic High School band and choir will perform Dec. 15. All concerts are free and open to the public.

“We are thrilled to see this annual tradition return to the Courthouse after a year’s hiatus,” said Rich Fitzgerald, Allegheny County executive.

“Thanks to vaccinations, it is safe for us to once again open up our doors to invite in the many school districts that call Allegheny County home,” Fitzgerald said in a prepared statement. “Having students share their talents with us is one of the highlights of this holiday season. We look forward to hearing the sounds of the holiday fill our courthouse and will also be broadcasting the same on Grant Street for everyone to enjoy.”

Beginning Nov. 30 and continuing weekdays through Dec. 20, a total of 27 local choirs, orchestras and bands are participating in this year’s program encompassing some 1,000 students, said Amie Downs, county spokeswoman.

Sarris Candies will provide refreshments and snacks for the school groups on each performance day, Downs said. Concerts start at 11:30 a.m. and conclude by 12:20 p.m.

Participating schools are asked to consider making donations of filled stockings or an unwrapped gift to The Holiday Project, a program that has provided holiday gifts to children and youth who receive services through the county’s human services system since the late 1960s. Concertgoers are also invited to donate.

More information about the The Holiday Project, including suggested gifts, is available online.

Students from Penn-Trafford, Steel Valley and Gateway school districts also will perform during the concert events. A schedule is available on the county’s website.
