The suspect in a fatal stabbing at Midtown Plaza Apartments has been arrested and is being held without bond at Allegheny County Jail.

Allegheny County police have charged Damian Baverso, 15, of East McKeesport with criminal homicide and making terroristic threats in connection with the death of 19-year-old Kai Brown on Friday afternoon.

Police allege the stabbing followed a fight after Brown, another man, and Baverso’s ex-girlfriend confronted Baverso over threatening text messages he had sent.

Baverso was arrested in Oakmont, police said. He was arraigned early Tuesday morning and faces a preliminary hearing Dec. 10 before Magisterial District Judge Kim Berkeley Clark. Baverso is charged as an adult.

In a criminal complaint filed by Allegheny County homicide detectives, police allege that Baverso texted his ex-girlfriend, who lived on the second floor of the building, said he was on the 10th floor of the building, and threatened to kill her; her unborn child; and her current boyfriend, Brown.

Police said that when Baverso’s ex-girlfriend, Brown and another man went to an apartment on the 10th floor to confront Baverso about the threats, Baverso and Brown began fighting. Baverso is accused of pulling out a knife and stabbing Brown under the arm, police said.

The other occupants of the apartment attempted to detain Baverso, police said, but he fled. The altercation was recorded on a cell phone by one of the occupants, according to the affidavit.

Brown was unresponsive when paramedics arrived on the scene and was pronounced dead at UPMC McKeesport hospital about an hour later, emergency personnel said.

He was reportedly a native of Chicago who moved to the Pittsburgh area four years ago, and had attended Brashear High School. Funeral arrangements were not immediately available.
