The family of a 19-year-old who died after being stabbed at Midtown Plaza Apartments is raising money on GoFundMe to pay for his funeral.

Kai Adonis Brown will be laid to rest Dec. 10 in his native Chicago.

That’s the same day that the teen-ager charged in connection with his death, Damian Baverso, 15, of East McKeesport is scheduled to face a preliminary hearing before Magisterial District Judge Kim Berkeley Clark.

Baverso is charged as an adult by Allegheny County police with criminal homicide and making terroristic threats.

Brown was a 2021 graduate of Pittsburgh’s Brashear High School. Family and friends said he moved to the Pittsburgh area four years ago with his father to escape a violent neighborhood in Chicago.

Allegheny County police said that Brown was attacked Nov. 19 by Baverso. Police allege that Baverso had texted threats to his ex-girlfriend, who lived at Midtown Plaza Apartments on Sinclair Street, and said that he was in the building and wanted to kill them.

When Brown, his ex-girlfriend and another man confronted Baverso, police allege Baverso produced a knife and stabbed Brown, then fled.

Baverso was arrested Nov. 23 in Oakmont and is being held in the Allegheny County Jail without bail.

Kai's older brother, Imari Brown, created the GoFundMe fundraiser, according to a spokeswoman.

The GoFundMe may be found at https://www.gofundme.com/f/kai-brown-funeral. Family members are trying to raise $9,000. As of Thursday, $4,821 had been raised from 76 donors.
