Springtime programming at Carnegie Library of McKeesport is in full swing, says library director Vincent D’Alesio.

“Other big news is the return of Wise Walks at Renzie Park, a neighborhood cleanup for Earth Day, Kite-Making, and the installation of a new projector screen in our Children’s Room, making movie days possible again,” he says. “We’d like to thank the Gismondi Family Foundation for the funds needed to make this needed purchase.”

The library’s summer reading program is also just around the corner, D’Alesio says.

“Be on the lookout for information on how to register — we’ll have an official registration party in early June — and remember that you can participate online as well through www.beanstack.com once the program is made public,” he says. “We’re also looking forward to welcoming the Carnegie Science Center to our library this summer for some summer STEM programs, so we’ll keep you all posted on that as well.”

Wise walks meet at 2:30 p.m. Tuesdays at the McKeesport Regional History & Heritage Center. Volunteers of any age are encouraged to meet in the parking lot along Arboretum Drive in Renziehausen Park, walk at their own pace and log their steps. The first walk for the season is April 19. No registration is necessary.

Special events coming up this month at the main library, 1507 Library Ave., include:

Kite-Flying — 1 to 3 p.m. April 15. In honor of National Kite Month, visitors are encouraged to bring their own kite and fly it on the library lawn.

Earth Day Poetry — 1 p.m. April 22, featuring Jim Busch. Poets are welcome to come and read aloud from a favorite poem about the environment, or with one of their own poems.

Earth Day Cleanup — 10 a.m. April 23. Join library volunteers to clean-up the neighborhood around the building. Let’s make our surroundings a little bit brighter. The activity will be outdoors, so please dress appropriately for the weather and meet at 1507 Library Ave. A pizza party will follow the clean-up.

Reading Ready Pittsburgh — 10:30 a.m. April 30. Mary Denison, the executive director of Reading Ready Pittsburgh, will visit the children’s room to give parents an overview of the programs provided by her organization. Programs include Ready4K, a child development and pre-literacy program that’s provided weekly via text message, and the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, which offers free monthly delivery of a children’s book to homes with children under age 5. The event is being presented in cooperation with Altrusa International of McKeesport. Refreshments will be provided and advance registration is requested by calling (412) 672-0625.
