Tense Exchange at Council Between Mayor, Rival

McKeesport Mayor Michael Cherepko and resident Corry Sanders exchanged tense words Wednesday night at the city council meeting when a discussion over speeding turned tense.

The debate could be a preview of things to come, since Sanders — who was elected to city council in 2015 but was unable to take his seat — has discussed the possibility of running against Cherepko in a future election.

During the public comment portion of the meeting, Sanders asked the mayor about road patching and resurfacing on Jenny Lind Street. Cherepko said the public works crews do the best they can with strategization and available resources.

But then Sanders followed with another question over safety and speeding on the street. He said inexperienced drivers can’t learn to “parallel park” on the street because of the speed that routinely exceeds “50 miles per hour” and more.

“It’s been like that forever and will always be that way,” Cherepko said. “People do not understand how government works. The police do the best they can.”

After more give and take, Cherepko voiced his frustration, arguing that Sanders talks about issues “based on no facts whatsoever” and asked a police officer to escort him from the podium.

“I’m not the mayor — yet,” Sanders said. He stepped away from the microphone but was not removed from council chambers and stayed for the remainder of the meeting, which continued.

In 2015, Sanders, was elected to McKeesport city council, but was not allowed to take office after an Allegheny County judge ruled that he was disqualified due to a 1993 drug conviction.

In 2019, Sanders received a pardon from state Gov. Tom Wolf and has discussed running for office in the city again, likely as mayor.

Cherepko was first elected mayor in 2011. His current four-year term continues through 2023.
