A Penn Hills man is being held in the Allegheny County Jail without bail in connection with a shooting Nov. 7 on Beacon Street in the city that sent the 45-year-old victim in the hospital in critical condition.
Quenton Hughes, 40, is charged by Allegheny County police with attempted homicide, aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a firearm. He faces a preliminary hearing Dec. 12 before Magisterial District Judge Kim Berkeley Clark in Pittsburgh.
Hughes surrendered to sheriff’s deputies without incident on Monday, police said.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Allegheny County Night Court, the victim was awakened early on the morning of Nov. 7 at his apartment in the 700 block of East Park Way by someone knocking on the door.
Police said the victim answered and found his estranged wife waiting for him. The woman told the victim that his children were crying and wanted to see him, according to the complaint.
The complaint states that the victim got dressed and agreed to follow the woman to a parked car about a block away near Evans Avenue, but instead he was confronted by a man police identified as Hughes.
Police allege that Hughes was dating the victim’s estranged wife and that the victim had previously been charged with stabbing Hughes during a 2021 confrontation.
Court records indicate the victim was sentenced to two years’ probation in connection with that incident.
Police said the suspect and another man, who was wearing a mask, ordered the victim and his estranged wife to the ground, where the victim was shot in both legs and the right hand. The suspect and the masked man then fled, the affidavit states.
The victim was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh, Uptown, police said.
A short time later, as police were investigating the shooting, an officer observed a man attempting to enter the victim’s apartment. Police said the man fled in a vehicle driven by Hughes, then returned a few minutes later. Officers stopped the vehicle and said the occupants reported that they had been robbed the night before and were looking for their wallets.
According to the criminal complaint, surveillance video places the same vehicle in the area of the shooting both immediately before and after the incident.
