With National Library Week just around the corner, Carnegie Library of McKeesport is encouraging Mon-Yough residents to take advantage of upcoming programs at the main location and White Oak Branch.

Library Director Vincent D’Alesio said the week of April 23-29 is set aside this year to celebrate libraries, as well as “the people who work at them, and the people who use them.”

Special programs at the main library during library week include a free breakfast for visitors at 8:45 a.m. April 24, free lunch on the lawn at 12 noon and an apron design class at 3 p.m. April 26, a session on how to upcycle used materials into bird feeders and bird houses on April 28, and a karaoke party at 12 noon April 29.

In addition, the White Oak branch will hold lunch on the lawn at 1 p.m. April 27.

The library also is resuming its “wise walks” on April 25 at Renziehausen Park. Wise walks meet in the parking lot of the McKeesport Regional History & Heritage Center at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesdays. Walkers proceed at their own pace, either in groups of friends or by themselves. The library also provides a snack.

At 2 p.m. Thursday (April 13), the White Oak branch will host a talk on “Lyme Disease Awareness” by Jon Banuelos of the Allegheny County Health Department.

Lyme disease is one of the most common reportable diseases in Pennsylvania, a spokesperson for the library said. Banuelos will explain the symptoms of Lyme disease and how it affects both humans and animals. Participants will learn how to protect themselves from ticks and prevent from being exposed.

“This is just a sample of the programming we've got coming up in the month of April,” D’Alesio said. “Also, come and check out the new paint job in our main entrance vestibule as well as in the magazine room on the lower floor.”

The library’s annual Penny Drive continues until the end of April, and there is still time to make a donation at any of the branches, he said.

In addition, the library is also distributing surveys to the community to determine what programs or services patrons want, D’Alesio said. “If you get a moment, please consider the questions and reply back to dalesiov2@einetwork.net with any responses you may have,” he said. “They help us to gauge how best to serve our patrons.”

The survey can be downloaded and printed here.

The main library is located at 1507 Library Ave., and the White Oak Branch is located in Heritage Hills Park. For more information, visit www.mckeesportlibrary.org or call (412) 672-0625.
