A U.S. Air Force C-130 Hercules --- similar to this one shown flying above Pittsburgh's Mt. Washington --- will take center stage when West Mifflin celebrates its community day Sept. 10 at Allegheny County Airport.

One of a line of transport aircraft that have supported U.S. military personnel since 1957, the venerable C-130 will join dozens of local community groups, a live radio broadcast and performances by The Bel Airs and the North Side Kids at West Mifflin Community Day.

Refreshment booths will sell pork, ribs and chicken from Bad Azz BBQ, while various vendors, including non-profit groups and athletic teams, will supply other foods and beverages. Hours are 12 noon to 6 p.m.

The C-130, provided by the Pittsburgh IAP Air Reserve Station, located at Pittsburgh International Airport, is making a return visit to West Mifflin Community Day.

With its crew of five, the C-130 can safely fly 64 fully equipped airborne troops more than 2,300 miles at around 350 miles per hour.  It is renowned for being able to take off and land on short runways.  Air Force crewmembers will be on hand to explain the aircraft’s capabilities and provide tours.

Among the scheduled entertainers at the airport stage will be the Pittsburgh Belairs and the North Star Kids. Both groups were featured at last year’s community day.

Specializing in Motown and Doo Wop harmony, the Bel Airs have graced many events throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania and the Mon Valley. Founded by Franco LeDonne, other group members include Fred Doubt, Gloria Perry and Johnny Rand.

A local youth ensemble, the North Star Kids have been performing throughout the Pittsburgh area over the last 30 years.  They have made live appearances at all of the venues for the three major Pittsburgh professional sports teams, as well as with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Events will be broadcast live over Internet radio station WMCK.FM in McKeesport. A project of Tube City Commuity Media, WMCK.FM this month broadcast video from McKeesport’s International Village in Renziehausen Park.

For more information about the event or to register for a vendor booth, contact West Mifflin Recreation Director Tony DiCenzo at (412) 466-8170.
