A Lawrence County man is jailed without bond pending a preliminary hearing on charges that he shot a fellow partygoer at an event on Marshall Drive in the city’s Haler Heights section.

Vance Lee Sykes, 30, of New Castle, formerly of Pittsburgh, is charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, carrying a firearm without a license and recklessly endangering another person in connection with the Memorial Day weekend incident.

Sykes also was wounded during the incident, according to a criminal complaint, which alleges that at least five shots were fired — two by Sykes, and third by another, unnamed person.

In the criminal complaint, Allegheny County police allege that Sykes and his romantic partner were invited to a pool party in the backyard of a home in the 100 block of Marshall Drive on the evening of May 26.

Police allege that a witness observed Sykes throw a young girl, approximately 13 years old, into the swimming pool.

The girl’s uncle, who also was present, told police that he confronted Sykes about his behavior and an argument ensued, according to the complaint.

Police stated that Sykes is suspected of taking a handgun from the trunk of his partner’s vehicle, returning to the pool area, and shooting another partygoer who intervened in the dispute.

The victim was shot in the abdomen and leg, police said, and was taken to Forbes Regional Medical Center in Monroeville in critical condition. His name was not released.

Sykes was shot in the groin and arm area, according to the criminal complaint, and was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital, Uptown. Police did not identify who returned fire at Sykes.

Police recovered three spent .40-caliber cartridges, two spent .38-caliber cartridges and a small .38-caliber revolver at the scene, the complaint states.

Names of witnesses were redacted from the criminal complaint and the release of the arrest warrant was delayed by 72 hours to protect the victims from retaliation, county police wrote.

Court records indicate that Sykes was arrested Friday night in New Castle and arraigned Saturday. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 17 before Magisterial District Judge Eugene Riazzi in McKeesport.
