A city woman who died Saturday morning at a hospital emergency room told police before her death that her husband shot her.

Tammy E. Cox, 51, was pronounced dead just after 6 a.m. in the emergency department at UPMC McKeesport hospital, the Allegheny County medical examiner’s office said. According to a police report, she had suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and another to the back.

Her husband, Robert G. Cox, 50, is being held in the Allegheny County Jail without bond pending a preliminary hearing Sept. 27 in Pittsburgh Municipal Court in connection with her death. Cox is charged with homicide by Allegheny County police.

Affidavits state that McKeesport police were called to Building 40 at Crawford Village just after 5 a.m. Saturday when a caller to Allegheny County 9-1-1 — later identified as Robert Cox — reported that a woman had been shot by someone outside.

But when police arrived, according to the complaint, Robert Cox told officers that Tammy Cox had shot herself. Tammy Cox said that Robert Cox had shot her, the complaint states.

Tammy Cox was taken by ambulance to UPMC McKeesport where she died of injuries. Robert Cox was taken into custody at the scene, according to a criminal complaint.

Detectives said they found a shotgun and two handguns inside the apartment, according to the complaint. Security camera footage also was recovered from outside the building, police said.
