A fist-fight Sunday afternoon at a bus stop in Glassport ended with one young man dead and another in jail without bond.
James M. Mack Jr., 18, of Glassport was pronounced dead at the scene of multiple gunshot wounds, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office said.
James E. Martin, 17, of McKeesport is charged by Allegheny County police with homicide, unlawful possession of a firearm and carrying a firearm without a license. He is being held in the Allegheny County Jail pending a preliminary hearing Dec. 4 in Allegheny County Common Pleas Court.
South Allegheny School District announced Monday that grief counselors would be on hand to support any students who knew Mack and needed support.
“If you met Jimmy, you never forgot Jimmy,” the district said in a statement released via social media. “He was a very personable young man whose devotion to his family and friends was evident by all who knew him. Jimmy will be missed dearly. Please continue to offer strength and support to his family.”
According to an affidavit of probable cause, Martin was waiting at the bus stop at the corner of Sixth Street and Monongahela Avenue when, according to a bystander, a red Jeep pulled up to the intersection and stopped.
The bystander told police she said to Martin, “You don’t look happy to see them,” and that Martin replied, “I’m not.”
Police allege that Mack and two other young men got out of the Jeep and confronted Martin. According to the affidavit, a bystander attempted to intervene but heard a gunshot and saw Mack fall to the ground.
The other youths fled the scene, police said.
According to the affidavit, investigators allege that the shooter, identified by police as Martin, then fired two more rounds into Mack as he lay on the ground.
Police said that moments later, a Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus stopped at the intersection and the shooter boarded the bus.
Although the bus continued on its route to Clairton, police said the driver notified PRT dispatch that a young man was down at the intersection, bleeding, and that a possible suspect had boarded her bus, the affidavit states.
Police officers from Clairton and Glassport stopped the bus at the intersection of Elm Street and North State Street in Clairton and took Martin into custody without incident, according to the complaint.
Police said that Martin had a .22-caliber revolver in his waistband when he was arrested, and that there were seven spent shell casings in the weapon.
Investigators have obtained surveillance video from a camera near the scene, according to the complaint.
