McKeesport police Capt. Dan Goughnour has officially announced his candidacy for state legislator from the 35th Legislative District.

A 16-year veteran of the city police and a member of the McKeesport Area School Board, Goughnour received the nomination from the Allegheny County Democratic Committee following a meeting Saturday at the Palisades.

Separately, the Republican Committee of Allegheny County has nominated White Oak Council Member Chuck Davis.

Candidates were chosen by parties, rather than in a primary election, because state law requires a special election to be held to fill the empty seat with 60 days of a vacancy. State Rep. Matt Gergely, 45, died unexpectedly Jan. 19 after a brief illness.

“This is a bittersweet honor,” said Goughnour. “Matt Gergely was a close friend of mine, and we worked closely to make McKeesport a great city. Matt encouraged me to seek a seat on the McKeesport school board, and developed in me my dedication to this community. I plan to continue his tradition of commitment throughout the Mon Valley.”

The special election is March 25.

Goughnour was joined Saturday by family and friends as well as retired state Sen. Jim Brewster of McKeesport, McKeesport Mayor Michael Cherepko, and former state Rep. Marc Gergely, Matt Gergely’s brother.

In addition to the city, the 35th District includes Clairton, Duquesne, Homestead, Liberty Borough, Lincoln Borough, Munhall, Port Vue, South Versailles Twp., Versailles, White Oak and parts of West Mifflin.

A graduate of the Allegheny County Police Academy and a lifelong resident of the city, Goughnour has served as a detective for juvenile crimes, and currently is the chief of detectives.

“Dan is a tremendous asset for our city and our region,” said Cherepko. “He knows our community, knows our people. He cares about making a positive impact on peoples’ lives. He’s going to be an excellent state representative.”

Goughnour lives in McKeesport with his wife, Lauren and their 3 children, Gavin, Gannon and Gracelynn. A former youth sports coach, his hobbies include boating, motorbiking and other outdoor activities with his family.
