White Oak resident Adam Kitta has announced his candidacy for the 35th Legislative District and is running on the Libertarian Party ticket.
Kitta, a lifelong resident of the Mon Valley, said the driving force of his candidacy has been his “passion to make a difference and determination to bring people together.”
A special election is being held March 25 to fill the vacancy left by the Jan. 19 death of State Rep. Matt Gergely of McKeesport.
The 35th District includes McKeesport, Clairton, Duquesne, Homestead, Liberty Borough, Lincoln Borough, Munhall, Port Vue, South Versailles Twp., Versailles, West Homestead, Whitaker, White Oak and portions of West Mifflin.
Kitta currently serves as the Assistant Director for The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services Department, overseeing its 28-county operation. He is also the vice president for Pennsylvania Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster, a non-profit organization that focuses on collaborating with non-profit and government agencies that provide support during a time of crisis.
“I have a heart for people and our community, I just want to see folks live a happy and successful life and our government is failing at ensuring that those opportunities exist,” Kitta said.
Kitta called his platform “community and individual-focused” and said he is focused on “providing ideas for gaining education, job training and new business opportunities in the district; looking at avenues to bolster community and volunteer organizations and reforming our criminal justice system to benefit both public safety and individuals impacted by the current system.”
The Pennsylvania General Assembly is currently split evenly, with 101 Democrats and 101 Republicans. Kitta would hold the tie-breaking vote, if elected.
The Democratic candidate in the 35th District is Dan Goughnour, a McKeesport police officer and school board member, and the Republican candidate is Chuck Davis, longtime White Oak council member and volunteer firefighter.
