It’s time for the City of Duquesne’s 32nd annual community day and the second-annual community day parade.

Organizers said they hope this year’s parade will build on the success of last year’s, when enthusiastic crowds — including former residents who returned to see the parade — lined the streets.

Community Day begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at Polish Hill Memorial Field. The parade kicks off at 11 a.m. along Grant Avenue between South Fourth Street and Clark Street. It will travel to Polish Hill and an Honor Guard will conduct a service to honor the veterans.

The grand marshal for this year’s parade is Tammi McMillan. She is a 1986 graduate of Duquesne High School and Cheyney University and has earned a doctorate from Point Park University.

McMillan is the ECE College in High School Coordinator at Carlow University. Her research focuses on how Black male teachers have served as both educators and role models in many communities. She previously served as Director of Educational Services at Hosanna House in Wilkinsburg.

She is an active member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority and in 2022 published her first children’s book, “Sunni Rae’s World: What Are Your Superpowers?”

Local units scheduled to march in the parade include the Duquesne Duke mascot, members of Duquesne School District athletic organizations, the Lego League and other groups from the Duquesne Education Center.

Organizers said veterans and veterans’ associations will be recognized during the parade along with First Responders and elected officials. Also participating will be the the Steel Dragon, Duke Boys, Pittsburgh Steeline, stilt walkers, Shriners clowns, members of the Lady Diamonds Dance Studio, and players from the women’s football team, the Pittsburgh Passion.

Horses and antique and classic cars will be showcased during the parade and local fire departments also will participate.

Community Day will again feature free food and water all day, and activities will continue until 8 p.m. Entertainment, a children’s activity area and a DJ will be featured along with representatives from community groups.
