Nearly $1.9 million in economic development money generated by casino gaming will benefit Mon-Yough area communities, state officials announced.
The money from the Gaming Economic Development Tourism Fund is administered by the state Department of Community & Economic Development and the Commonwealth Financing Authority for infrastructure development projects, job training, community improvements, public safety and public interest projects in Allegheny County.
“These grants are investments in our communities, and I’m happy to help bring these funds back to Allegheny County,” said State Sen. Nick Pisciottano of West Mifflin. “From improving public facilities to supporting local job creation, GEDTF funding helps advance projects that make our region stronger and better prepared for future growth.”
Local grants of interest include:
• $140,000 for improvements to the bandshell at Renziehausen Park
• $55,000 for renovations to the Executive Building on Fifth Avenue, Downtown
• $100,000 for repairs to the parking lot at the Dravosburg baseball field
• $55,000 for road re-surfacing in North Versailles Twp.
• $45,000 to expand training and workforce development at Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics
• $105,000 for the White Oak Veterans’ Memorial Project
Additional projects were funded in Braddock, Brentwood, Castle Shannon, Clairton, East Pittsburgh, Elizabeth Borough, Elizabeth Twp., Monroeville, North Braddock, Plum, Turtle Creek, West Elizabeth, West Homestead and West Mifflin.
“These are worthwhile projects that will benefit our area in many ways — from infrastructure to recreation,” said State Rep. Dan Goughnour of McKeesport. “Investments like these will help keep the Mon Valley moving forward.”
Pisciottano thanked Goughnor and other state officials who worked to bring funds back to the district, including state Reps. Jessica Benham, John Inglis, Andrew Kuzma, Brandon Markosek, Joe McAndrew, Dan Miller and Abigail Salisbury.
“I’m proud of the teamwork that went into securing these awards,” Pisciottano added. “We want to help our constituents and bring funds back from Harrisburg to boost the communities we represent in Allegheny County, and it is a pleasure to work with these state representatives to do just that.”
The GEDTF program, administered by the Redevelopment Authority of Allegheny County, provides financial assistance to awardees to carry out important economic development projects that strengthen local infrastructure, support business growth, and expand community assets. Eligible applicants include municipalities, authorities, councils of government, non-profit organizations, and for-profit businesses.
