Historic Preservation is More Than Just Saving Old Buildings

Historic preservation is more than just saving neat old buildings, says Karamagi Rujumba of Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation. Before an old building is saved, experts need to determine if it's worth saving because of its architectural or historic value. Then, they need to find a new purpose for that building.

Since its redevelopment of the former Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad Terminal into the Station Square complex, Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation has become something of an international model for rehabbing and reusing old structures.

PH&LF recently created the Landmarks Preservation Resource Center in Wilkinsburg to offer inexpensive classes and seminars where homeowners, landlords and do-it-yourselvers can learn the techniques of historic preservation, and also understand why preserving Pittsburgh's built legacy is important --- and also financially beneficial to communities and taxpayers.

Since 2007, PH&LF has been responsible for about $22 million in community development in Wilkinsburg Borough, through historic preservation and reuse of old homes and other structures.

Rujumba was our guest last Friday on "Two Rivers, 30 Minutes."
