Work will begin soon on what's believed to be the first new retail store in 30 years to be constructed along Versailles Avenue in the city.
Family Dollar has announced plans to build an 8,000-square-foot store with a parking lot on Versailles between Ohio and Craig streets, Mayor Mike Cherepko said Wednesday.
Construction will begin in spring 2016, once property acquisition and demolition of several existing structures is completed.
"Family Dollar’s interest in Versailles Avenue is special, because it’s something we don’t see every day," Cherepko said. "They are providing residents in that area with a much-needed service while replacing a full block of blight with new development."
The store will be built in what is otherwise primarily a residential area, said A.J. Tedesco Jr., the city's community development director, adding that it will be a "large benefit" to people who live in the nearby neighborhoods.
"“Many residents are without transportation, and this will give them more convenient access to items they may need in their daily living," he said.
Tedesco said the process began in August 2014, when Tedesco met with Family Dollar's development partners, the Durban Group and CBRE Real Estate.
When the city officials took developers around to look at potential sites, the developers showed the most interest in Versailles Avenue.
The developers then contacted individual property owners to establish agreements to make the development possible.
Eight to 10 people, including a manager and assistant manager, will be hired when the store is ready to open, a Family Dollar spokesman said.
The store will be Family Dollar's fourth location in McKeesport. Existing Family Dollar stores are located on Lysle Boulevard near the Jerome Avenue Bridge, on Walnut Street at Eden Park Boulevard, and on West Fifth Avenue near Hartman Street.
Based near Charlotte, N.C., Family Dollar is a Fortune 300 company listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Its stores sell a variety of staple merchandise, including health and beauty aids, clothing, stationery and some packaged food. The company has more than 8,200 stores in 46 states.
