Cherepko Wins Nomination; New Faces Likely on City Council

McKeesport Mayor Mike Cherepko easily held off his lone challenger for the Democratic nomination in Tuesday's primary.

Meanwhile, two sitting city council members appear to have lost their party's nomination.

Turnout was low in McKeesport, as in the rest of Allegheny County. Only 24.8 percent of the city's 11,888 registered voters cast ballots, which was higher than countywide turnout of 18.2 percent.

Primary elections in Pennsylvania, however, are only open to voters who have chosen a party.

According to complete but unofficial results from the Allegheny County Division of Elections, Cherepko defeated David Donato by 1,641 to 933 votes. Donato is a former McKeesport Area school director and city Recreation Director who had sharply criticized Cherepko's first term in office.

There were no Republican candidates filed for McKeesport mayor, and there were only 99 write-in votes cast in that party's primary. Cherepko could conceivably face a write-in candidate in the fall.

Top vote-getters in the Democratic primary for four seats on McKeesport city council were incumbent Keith A. Soles, incumbent Richard Dellapenna, and newcomers Timothy Brown and Corry Sanders.

Trailing were incumbent Dale R. McCall, Arla Payne-Stinson and incumbent Dan Carr. There were 69 write-in votes on the Republican side.

Democratic voters outnumber Republican voters in McKeesport by a wide margin. If, as expected, Brown and Sanders are elected in the fall, McKeesport would have three African-Americans on council for the first time in the city's history.

In the race for five seats on McKeesport Area School Board, incumbent school directors Joe Lopretto, Mary Jane Keller and Steve Kondrosky secured Democratic nominations, along with newcomers James Brown and Mindy L. Moody. Trailing were incumbent Terri Kisan and Kevin Henry.

Kisan will be on the Republican ballot for McKeesport Area school director in the fall. She secured one of the five nominations in that party's primary, along with Lopretto, Keller, Moody and Kondrosky.
