Two-way traffic has been restored on an important commuter route between Pittsburgh and the Mon Valley.

Crews on Thursday morning (May 14) completed sewer line installation on Mifflin Road in Pittsburgh's Hays neighborhood almost one month ahead of schedule and opened one southbound lane.

The road, state Route 885, has been restricted to northbound traffic since January.

It's not the end of roadwork pain for people in McKeesport, West Mifflin and elsewhere who use Mifflin Road, which also serves Port Authority's Route 56 buses. A spokesman for the state Department of Transportation says culvert replacement work and roadway reconstruction will begin on July 6, and a long-term 50 calendar day closure of Mifflin Road in both directions will occur.

Additional information will be issued prior to this work beginning.

Minor work with restrictions will occur as needed on Mifflin Road prior to the long-term closure.

The Mifflin Road repairs are part of Phase 2 of a $11.18 million Glenwood Bridge interchange project that includes
the replacement of four culverts, utility relocation, traffic signal upgrades and the resurfacing of Mifflin Road between Lebanon Road and Doerville Street.  Golden Triangle Construction is the prime contractor.
