With the help of Fire Department of North Versailles and West Wilmerding volunteer fire department, the Easter Bunny will be touring North Versailles Twp. from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday (March 28).
The routes are posted on the township website. The tour will end at 1 p.m. at the North Versailles Twp. municipal building on Greensburg Avenue, and there will be treats and a photo opportunity.

The spring township clean-up will be held on from 9 a.m. to 12 noon May 1.
Volunteers are asked to meet in the township building parking lot to get gloves and supplies. A large dumpster will be placed at Green Valley Fire Hall for big items.
Anyone who would like to help is asked to email Commissioner Tracy Yusko at bugaboo03@comcast.net. Pizza and refreshments will be served at the community center following the clean-up.

Development of the former Eastland Mall property is getting closer to becoming a reality.
North Versailles Twp. commissioners announced during their March meeting that a building permit has been issued to Benderson Development Co., the owner of the former mall site on East Pittsburgh-McKeesport Boulevard.
It has been rumored that the interested tenant is Amazon.com, although no official announcement has been made. The plan is to build a 142,386-square-foot distribution facility.
“They should have shovels in the ground in June or July,” Commissioner Allen Wagner said.

A year ago, when the state shut down all but essential services, a Braddock-based nonprofit found that one of its services could not stop and the others were more vital than ever.
Paula McWilliams, CEO of Heritage Community Initiatives, said the bus service her organization operates, Heritage Community Transportation, was needed to make sure that workers in eastern communities, including Braddock, Liberty, McKeesport, North Versailles Twp., Port Vue and White Oak, could get to their jobs at hospitals such as Forbes Regional, UPMC McKeesport and UPMC East.
The Heritage buses, which are 14-passenger vans, operate on three fixed routes. They had to be modified for transporting workers and senior citizens who needed to get groceries and to medical appointments while keeping passengers and drivers safe.

Nearly 80 East Allegheny School District teachers and support employees are on schedule to be vaccinated against COVID-19, Superintendent Alan Johnson told the school board this week.
A clinic was set up at the Allegheny Intermediate Unit offices at the Waterfront in Homestead, and distribution of the one dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine began on March 11, he said. The focus for the first round has been on vaccinating elementary school staff, Johnson said.
“Just to give you an idea of the demand for this, there were a total of 7,400 doses allocated to Allegheny County for educators and there were 18,000 requests for the vaccine,” he said. “So obviously demand exceeded supply.”

Kathleen Tomko Molinaro always hoped someone would break her high school record in swimming — and now, her wish has come to fruition.
“It’s been a long time, but I had always hoped someone would break my record,” Molinaro said. “I’m happy for Autumn.”
East Allegheny High School senior Autumn Christner broke Tomko’s record for the 100-meter breaststroke in a swim meet against North Catholic on Feb. 9.
Molinaro set the record for breaststroke at East Allegheny High School in 1982. In addition to swimming, she was the president of Student Council and the recipient of an American Legion award. She also swam for a year in college.

When Autumn Christner was trying out different sports growing up, she wasn’t expecting to fall in love with swimming. Thirteen years on, she’s setting new records.
“I did all types of different sports growing up, and I didn’t really like any of it. My sister did swimming — that’s what got me into it,” Christner said.
The East Allegheny senior broke a 39-year-old record for the 100-meter breaststroke in a swim meet against North Catholic on Feb. 9.

East Allegheny students continue returning for in-person instruction.
At this month’s school board meeting, Superintendent Alan Johnson reported the gradual process began Jan. 25 with special education students. Each week following has ushered in the return of select grades and will conclude on Feb. 22 with the remaining grades 9, 10, and 11 to make the transition complete.
The students are assigned to color coded cohorts (blue on Mondays and Tuesdays, gold on Thursdays and Fridays). Wednesday is a remote day in order to give custodial staff a chance to clean the buildings between cohorts. The recent winter weather advisories have caused disruptions in the return process as some of the in-person days were moved to remote due to travel concerns.

Progress is being made on a proposed distribution facility to be built at the former Eastland Mall site.
At the January meeting, North Versailles Twp. Commissioner Allen Wagner said he recently received an email from Trammell Crow Co., the Texas-based real estate developer that is representing the potential tenants.
The email said that Trammell Crow is pursuing necessary permits from Allegheny County and state agencies, but the pandemic has made acquiring these more difficult, Wagner said.

East Allegheny School District will begin hybrid learning in the district Jan. 25.
School directors this week voted 5-4 to resume some in-person classes. The district has been fully remote since Dec. 1 based on a recommendation from the state Department of Dealth when the state’s COVID-19 daily case count reached 6,000.
Prior to that, both the high school and elementary school were operating within a scaffolded learning model accommodating students with individualized education plans (IEP's) in person.

A strong odor reported by residents of McKeesport, North Versailles Twp. and White Oak on Tuesday night was not a natural gas leak, a spokesman said.
Allegheny County emergency personnel said firefighters were dispatched to several locations along Route 48 just after 7 p.m. after 9-1-1 callers said they smelled natural gas.
But Barry Kukovich, spokesman for Peoples Gas, said there were no gas leaks or any service problems reported in Route 48 corridor on Tuesday night.
Natural gas is odorless, and the “gas smell” actually comes from a chemical called methyl mercaptan, which is designed to help customers detect a leak.
Kukovich said that it’s possible that a truck carrying mercaptan, or a similar chemical, passed through the area on Tuesday night, but the smell was not related to Peoples Gas.
