The McKeesport police annual fund drive is underway.
A spokesman said the donations are used to purchase non-budgeted items and equipment used by officers while serving McKeesport and Dravosburg, which is patrolled by city police under a contract with the borough.
Donations are strictly voluntary, a spokesman said.
“The items purchased from these donations are used on a daily basis by our police department,” he said. “Several of these items would not have been purchased if it were not for the generosity of the local businesses and private citizens of both McKeesport and Dravosburg.”

The ramp from the McKeesport-Duquesne Bridge to East Fifth Avenue, northbound, will remain closed through Dec. 11, the state Department of Transportation has announced.
A spokesman for PennDOT District 11 said the extended closure is necessary so that crews from Michael Facchiano Contracting of Mt. Lebanon can complete their work repairing joints and concrete.
The original schedule had projected the ramp could re-open last week.
The posted detour uses Bowman Avenue, East Pittsburgh-McKeesport Boulevard and Route 30 back to Fifth Avenue in East McKeesport.

McKeesport Regional History & Heritage Center has canceled its planned church tour and cookie walk due to the increased number of COVID-19 cases.
A spokesperson said the event, planned for Dec. 12, was scrapped after the Allegheny County Health Department advised residents to stay at home and avoid unnecessary social activities and travel.
The heritage center also will not be participating in this week’s Festival of Trees.

St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church is taking orders now for a fish fry Dec. 4.
Spokeswoman Dorothy Ikach said all orders must be placed in advance. The deadline is Wednesday (Nov. 25). No sales will be made on the day of the event.
The fish fry comes on the heels of the church’s recent “Small Taste of Serbia” takeout event, Ikach said.
The menu includes hand-breaded haddock on a hard roll. A la carte items include halushki (sauteed cabbage and noodles), Spanish rice, French fries, sauerkraut and bean soup, apple strudel, and palachinke (cheese filled crepes).

UPDATE: On Monday, Carnegie Library of McKeesport announced that no computer use will be permitted.

Carnegie Library of McKeesport is temporarily limiting some in-person services due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases in Allegheny County.
Beginning this week and continuing for at least two weeks, no browsing or in-person programming will be permitted inside the library or the White Oak branch, said Vincent D’Alesio, acting director.
The temporary restrictions are designed to comply with the Allegheny County Health Department’s “stay-at-home” advisory.
“This service model will be reviewed for changes in two weeks,” D’Alesio said. “We apologize for any inconvenience.”

Eight hundred Mon Valley families received free Thanksgiving turkeys and ingredients for side dishes during a giveway Saturday morning at McKeesport Area High School.
The giveaway was held as a drive-through event to ensure social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic. McKeesport police helped direct traffic as cars waited along Eden Park Blvd.
The giveaway was arranged by Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania and state Rep. Austin Davis of McKeesport. Volunteers loaded boxes into the back seats and trunks of cars “bucket-brigade” style in the parking lot of Tiger Stadium.

White Oak Rotary Club will host a “fido walk” at 10 a.m. Saturday to raise money for the White Oak Safe Animal Haven.
Rotary member Dan Dougherty said the fundraiser is designed to replace the “Fido Ball” gala usually held in November.
“With COVID-19, that naturally couldn’t happen, so we came up with the idea of a 5K to replace it this year, and call it the Fido Walk,” Dougherty said. “Folks are invited to bring their dogs to walk with them if they’d like, as long as they’re under control and cleaned up after.”

City officials, parents and volunteers are blasting a decision by the Boys & Girls Club of Western Pennsylvania to close the LaRosa Boys & Girls Club on Ravine Street.
The Pittsburgh-based organization notified McKeesport Mayor Michael Cherepko of the closing in a letter to city hall on Wednesday, and with a posting on its website.
In an interview with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Lisa Abel-Palmieri, president and chief executive officer of BGCWPA, called the closure a “merger” of the Duquesne and McKeesport programs, and blamed it on declining attendance in McKeesport and the high cost of overhead, as well as the COVID-19 pandemic.
But Cherepko and two former directors of the LaRosa club said Abel-Palmieri’s statements are not accurate.
“That story in the Post-Gazette made me sick,” said City Administrator Tom Maglicco, who served as executive director of the club for 13 years and sits on its advisory board. “In my opinion, she’s wrong. There is no doubt in my mind there’s enough kids in this community to fill that club.”

Weight restrictions have been posted on a portion of Dravosburg Hill due to the conditions of one of the overpasses.
Steve Cowan, district spokesman for the state Department of Transportation, said the bridge that crosses the Union Railroad tracks near Sandy Lake is restricted to trucks weighing no more than 22 tons, or combination vehicles up to 27 tons.
Warning signs were posted on Richland Avenue and Pittsburgh-McKeesport Boulevard last week.
