The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank is planning to double the amount of fresh produce it provides to needy people throughout Western Pennsylvania by 2025.
To make that possible, the Duquesne-based organization is planning a renovation of its facility in the RIDC industrial park that would expand its cold storage area as well as its "cold dock" --- the part of the warehouse where fresh vegetables and fruit are received and repacked for distribution.
Officials last week announced that the food bank's project has been awarded $1 million from the state's Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program.
For nutritional and health reasons, food banks are moving away from pre-packaged boxed and canned foods and towards fresh foods, said Justin Lee, chief operating officer for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

The City of Duquesne is appealing an arbitrator's decision to reinstate a police secretary accused of misusing a criminal justice database.
Lori Achtzehn had worked for the city for more than 40 years before being fired by city council in March 2018.
On June 25, an arbitrator ruled that the firing violated the terms of the city's contract with Teamsters Local 205, which represents Duquesne rank-and-file employees, and ordered Achtzehn reinstated with back pay.
Duquesne believes the arbitrator was wrong and is appealing to Allegheny County Common Pleas Court, said Myron Sainovich, city solicitor.

Former Duquesne police chief Richard S. Adams has been named to a vacant seat on city council, over the objections of Mayor Nickole Nesby.
At its June meeting, council voted 3-1 to name Adams to fill the seat vacated by the May 28 resignation of Fawn McDaniel. Nesby voted no.
Nesby had earlier made a motion to appoint William Danko to council. The motion failed 2-2, with Nesby and Councilman Tim Caldwell voting "yes" and Councilwoman Terra Henderson-Murphy and Councilwoman Elaine Washington voting “no.”
Danko “will bring new ideas to the city of Duquesne," Nesby said. "He can also bring experience as well as diversity to council."

More than 30 people --- many from the Mon Valley --- were rounded up early Wednesday morning by FBI agents and local police and arrested on federal drug charges related to trafficking cocaine, heroin, crack cocaine and firearms.
In a prepared release, U.S. Attorney Scott W. Brady said a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh has issued three separate, but related indictments which were unsealed this week.

A Philadelphia man died after being shot multiple times Wednesday night at a home in Duquesne.
Ivan Walls, 45, was pronounced dead at a Pittsburgh hospital nearly three hours after the incident, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office said.
In a prepared statement, Duquesne police said the incident happened inside a house in the 1100 block of Karl Avenue just before 7 p.m.

Allegheny County police have named a suspect in connection with a shooting on Route 837 in Duquesne that sent a motorist to the hospital.
In a prepared statement, county police Sgt. Venerando Costa said Tarone T. Jones (above), 39, of North Versailles Twp. is wanted in connection with the shooting May 3 of a 30-year-old man near the intersection of Route 837 and Grant Street.
On Tuesday, a warrant was issued for Jones' arrest by Magisterial District Judge Scott Schricker. Jones is charged with aggravated assault and attempted homicide.

More than 30 community groups, businesses and organizations will meet with residents to provide information and answer questions at an event Wednesday in Duquesne.
The free community resource fair will be open from 4 to 7 p.m. in the gymnasium at Duquesne Elementary School, 300 Kennedy Ave., and is being sponsored by the Duquesne City School District. Refreshments will be served and no registration is necessary, a spokeswoman said.

The ramp that connects the Duquesne-McKeesport Bridge to Route 837 south in Duquesne will be closed on Monday and Tuesday so that crews can complete pavement repairs.
A district spokesman for the state Department of Transportation said the closure will happen, weather-permitting, from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Traffic headed toward Dravosburg and Clairton from the bridge will instead be asked to use the South Linden Street exit, and then turn left onto Route 837 at the traffic light.
The work is part of the $2.42 million preservation project at the Duquesne-McKeesport Bridge, the PennDOT spokesman said.

A 30-year-old man was in critical condition Friday afternoon after being shot on Route 837 in Duquesne.
Duquesne and Allegheny County police said the shooting happened just after 10:30 a.m. during an argument at a traffic light. The suspect fled in a dark-colored sedan in the direction of Homestead.
In a prepared statement, county police Inspector Andrew Schurman said that it appears the victim was driving his SUV on Route 837 when he stopped at a traffic light at the intersection of Grant Street. The victim got out of his car and approached another vehicle, on foot, Schurman said.

Carnegie Library of McKeesport has scheduled a full slate of events during National Library Week. All events are free and open to the public.
At 10 a.m. Tuesday, the library's main branch, 1507 Library Ave., will screen the 2018 feature film "On the Basis of Sex," a biographical drama starring Felicity Jones as a young Ruth Bader Ginsburg arguing the early cases of her career as a lawyer.
The movie also stars Armie Hammer, Justin Theroux, Jack Reynor, Cailee Spaeny, Sam Waterston and Kathy Bates.
