An effort to reopen the former YMCA in Wilmerding has gotten a big boost from a local business.
Allegheny Petroleum Products Co. has pledged $75,000 over three years to the new Wilmerding Community Center Inc. The gift was announced Friday.
Organizers are hoping the former YMCA will reopen this August --- on or about the one year anniversary of its closure.
Barb Kudis, president of Allegheny Petroleum, says the company hopes its gift spurs other donations. The 32-year-old company has been headquartered in Wilmerding for all but five years of its existence.
"We're a big supporter of the community," she says. "We have a lot of employees in the area, and the Wilmerding area has been a good partner of ours for many years."

“Laugh, cry, and find your way home again,” is the tagline director/producer Amanda Rosco suggested as a way for East Allegheny students to explain the essence of this year’s musical, “Bright Star.”
Written and composed by Steve Martin -- comedian, actor, musician, author, playwright and producer -- and Edie Brickell, the musical is set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina just after World War II, with flashbacks to 1923.
The music is a mixture of bluegrass and country, and grew out of their collaboration on “Love Has Come for You,” a 2013 Grammy-winning bluegrass album with Brickell’s lyrics and singing and Martin on banjo.
“Bright Star” opened on Broadway in 2016, and was nominated for a number of awards.

A raccoon captured near the intersection of Maryland Avenue and Westbury Road in North Versailles Twp. has tested positive for rabies, the Allegheny County Health Department said.
The animal was brought to a health department facility earlier this week.
It is the fourth rabid animal --- and third rabid raccoon --- reported in Allegheny County so far this year.
County residents are being reminded to always avoid stray and wild animals, even if they appear healthy, to avoid exposure to rabies, a spokesman said. If an animal is acting strangely and appears to be infected, he said, call your animal control officer, local police or the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
