Weekly Meetings Underway as NV Twp. Plans 150th Celebration

Weekly meetings are now underway at 6 p.m. Tuesdays for North Versailles residents interested in planning the township's 150th anniversary celebration.

At the February meeting, Commissioner Tracey Yusko reported that the two-day celebration will include a parade on Aug. 1, followed by an event at the Pitcairn-Monroeville Sportsmen's Club on Route 48, including bands, fireworks, rides and activities for children, as well as food trucks and community tables.

Yusko said she expects the event will have “the feel of a community picnic.”

NV Twp. Commissioners to Address Stormwater Concerns

Water damage from sump pumps is causing concern for residents in North Versailles Twp.

During the public comment portion of the February meeting, resident Michael Frawley told township commissioners that he's never had a problem until a neighbor's sump pump was installed last summer, creating hazardous conditions.

“Five inches of water froze on the driveway causing my tenant to fall, requiring medical attention,” he said. “The water is running down my driveway, 24 hours a day --- it never stops.”

Warning Issued After Rabid Raccoon Caught in NVT

A raccoon captured near the intersection of Maryland Avenue and Westbury Road in North Versailles Twp. has tested positive for rabies, the Allegheny County Health Department said.

The animal was brought to a health department facility earlier this week.

It is the fourth rabid animal --- and third rabid raccoon --- reported in Allegheny County so far this year.

County residents are being reminded to always avoid stray and wild animals, even if they appear healthy, to avoid exposure to rabies, a spokesman said. If an animal is acting strangely and appears to be infected, he said, call your animal control officer, local police or the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

Brewster Expands Office Hours, Food Bank Reach

Brewster announced partnerships with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and the Westmoreland County Food Bank as he also announced office hours for additional communities in the 45th Senatorial District.

The district stretches from Baldwin and Brentwood in Pittsburgh's South Hills to New Kensington in Westmoreland County.

“We’ve joined with area food banks to expand information availability and develop greater access to food for those in need,” Brewster said.  “Information about the food banks and locations of their services in our district are on our website and staff at my permanent and satellite offices will help facilitate contact.”

NV Twp. Commissioners OK Grant Application for Fairhaven Park

North Versailles Twp. will seek $140,234 from the Allegheny County Community Infrastructure and Tourism Fund for renovations at Fairhaven Park.

At their January meeting, commissioners authorized Parks and Recreation Director Lisa Green to apply for a grant from the CITF fund.

In other business:

The cost to rent the hall at the township Community Center has gone up, from $175 to $250 for residents and from $300 to $400 for non-residents, effective immediately. Commissioners voted to approve the change.

NV Twp. Anniversary Committee to Meet Thursday

The North Versailles Twp. 150th Anniversary Planning Committee meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday at the municipal building, 1401 Greensburg Ave. Anyone interested in serving on the committee is welcome to attend.

Other Upcoming Events

North Versailles Twp. Family Night, including snow tubing, will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Feb. 28 at Boyce Park. To attend, RSVP by Feb. 25 to the township's Parks and Recreation Department at (412) 823-6602, extension 104.

The Art and Apple Juice Painting Classes for children ages 5-12 will be held Feb. 1, Feb. 8, March 1 and March 29 at the North Versailles Twp. community center, 1401 Greensburg Ave. RSVP to the Parks and Recreation department.

 

Former Wilmerding Y to Reopen as Community Center

The former Wilmerding YMCA is scheduled to re-open early this year as the new Wilmerding Community Center, Inc., according to Peter McGinty, the center’s executive director.

The center, located on Ice Plant Hill Road, features a fitness center, swimming pool, child care day camps and the Silver Sneakers program.

At Wednesday's meeting of the North Versailles Twp. commissioners, McGinty said the new community center will need the support of all of the area communities.

“That’s why I’m here at North Versailles,” McGinty told the commissioners. “I met with the school district, I spoke with the East Allegheny Business Association and met with (state Sen.) Jim Brewster and (state Rep. Joe) Markosek.”

No Tax Increase in 2019 North Versailles Budget

There is no property tax increase planned for North Versailles Twp. residents in 2019.

At their Dec. 20 meeting, township commissioners approved a 2019 budget in the amount of $8,206,638, with property taxes set at 7.75 mills, including 7.25 mills for the general fund in 0.5 mills to support the volunteer fire service.

Median property value in North Versailles is $57,000, according to the Allegheny County Treasurer's Office.

The millage represents $7.75 in property tax on each $1,000 of a property's assessment. A property assessed at $50,000 would owe $441.75 in township property tax.

NV Twp. Commissioners OK GetGo at Kings Site

North Versailles Twp. commissioners have unanimously approved site plans for a new GetGo at the intersection of U.S. Route 30 and state Route 48, and executives from Giant Eagle say groundbreaking could happen as early as spring.

The convenience store, gas station and restaurant would replace the existing Kings Family Restaurant as well as the site of a former Marathon gasoline station.

Pasquale “Pat” Avolio, director of real-estate development and construction for Giant Eagle, spoke to commissioners at their Dec. 20 meeting. “We still need approval from PennDOT for a traffic impact study as well all requisite approvals from the municipality,” he said.

According to Allegheny County tax records, GetGo purchased the site in August for $6.5 million.

NVT Will Participate in Troop Banner Program

Inspired by a growing trend in Western Pennsylvania, North Versailles Twp. commissioners agreed to participate in the Military Banner Tribute Program.

Commission Vice President Sam Juliano and Commissioner George Thompson said the banners will be displayed along Route 30 and other roads.

“It’s a nice honor," Thompson said. "Bethel Park, for example, has over 100 of them on their streets.” The banners will be paid for by families of service members and will be on display from Memorial Day to Veterans Day, according to township manager Patricia Logo.

Dravosburg, East Pittsburgh, McKeesport and Port Vue also have participated in the troop banners program.
