W.N. Library Slates ‘Fill-a-Bag’ Book Sale

West Newton Library, 124 N. Water St., will hold a jewelry and “fill-a-bag” book sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 24 in the parking lot, a spokesperson said.

All visitors will be asked to practicing social distancing and to wear masks. Library volunteers said that more than two years’ worth of donations of gently used books have been sanitized and quarantined, and will be on sale.

Parking will be available at the West Newton Senior Center or other nearby spaces. For more information, call (724) 633-0798.

The West Newton Lions Club, 511 Pittsburgh St., will hold an Ash Wednesday (Feb. 17) fish fry to raise money to support its programs.

The menu includes Alaskan pollock deep-fried fish sandwich platter, baked macaroni & cheese or haluski, and cole slaw for $12, or a fish sandwich only for $6.75.

The West Newton Center for Active Adults is selling a special fundraising raffle ticket tied to the Pennsylvania Lottery’s April 1 evening three-digit drawing.

“I think we can safely say that 2020 made fools of all of us, but winter blew in and with the change in seasons came the change in calendars,” said Paul A Kurzdorfer III, center manager. “Now we sit in 2021 anxiously awaiting spring and those better days ahead.”

W. Newton Library Hosts Book Sale

West Newton Library, 124 N. Water St., is holding a used book sale, a spokesperson said.

Visitors to the library can fill a bag for $5 during regular business hours, 12 noon to 5 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays, 12 noon to 7 p.m. Wednesdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.

All books have been sanitized and held for three days prior to being placed on sale, the spokesperson said.

W.N. Library Plans Pie Sale

The West Newton Library will be selling pies to raise money. Order forms are available at Gary Johnson’s Gingerbread Bakery, 111 South Second St., or inside the library, 124 North Water St., or may be obtained by sending email to westnewton@wlnonline.org.

Pie orders must be received by Nov. 21 and may be picked up between 12 noon and 6 p.m. Nov. 24, at the bakery.

Available pies include pumpkin, apple, sugar-free apple, Dutch apple, cherry, Dutch cherry, peach, blueberry and coconut cream. Each pie is $12. Pumpkin roll also is available for $10.

Payment with forms can be dropped off at the bakery or mailed to West Newton Library, P.O. Box 221, West Newton, PA 15089.

 

WN Church Collecting ‘Toys for Tots’

West Newton First Church of God, 157 North Second St., has three mission projects for the month of November.

A church spokesperson said the congregation is collecting “Toys for Tots,” collecting Kleenex and pump hand sanitizers for teachers at West Newton Elementary School, and collecting items to be sent to people serving in the armed forces.

Anyone wishing to participate is welcome, the spokesperson said. Items can be dropped off at the church. Call (724) 872-7467.

In December, the church is holding its second-annual Cookie Walk fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 12. Masks and social distancing will be in place, and cookies will be sold by the pound.

 

W.N. Library Seeks Book Donations

The West Newton Library is accepting donations of books for its back room book sale, a spokesperson said.

Books should be no older than 10 years. Hardcover, paperback, children’s books, biographies, non-fiction and DVDs are accepted. No cookbooks, encyclopedias or textbooks can be accepted.

W.N. Library Accepting Memorial Gifts

West Newton Public Library is encouraging patrons to consider honoring a friend or loved one by purchasing a book in their name. The cost is $25, a spokeswoman said.

People who want to memorialize someone should tell the library about their favorite author or their interests so that the library can purchase an appropriate item. The acknowledgement will be placed inside the front cover.

The person being honored, or their family, will receive a notification of the gift.

West Newton Library Hosts Ham Dinner

West Newton Public Library will hold a ham dinner fundraiser from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 24, a spokeswoman said.

Cost is $15 and dinners will be take-out only from Gary's Chuck Wagon Restaurant, 109 South Second St.

Pause Book Donations, W.N. Library Says

West Newton Public Library is “respectfully asking” that no more donations be made for its upcoming book sale “due to the outstanding response.”

The library is holding the used book sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 3 in its parking lot at 124 N. Water St. Social distancing measures will be in place and masks are required.

A spokesperson said that the library has been asked by the Westmoreland Library Network to disinfect all books that come into the facility for any purpose. All of the items that already have been donated must be cleaned off before Oct. 3, the library said.

Donations of gently used books and other items will be accepted again after the sale, the spokesperson said.
